Dyslipidemia is a condition marked by elevated levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides, or a low level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). It is a major risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). The pathophysiology of dyslipidemia involves a complex interplay of genetic and lifestyle factors. The clinical manifestations of dyslipidemia are often silent, making routine screening vital.
Diagnosis of dyslipidemia involves laboratory tests including a lipid panel which measures total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and triglycerides. The American Heart Association recommends that adults aged 20 or older should have their cholesterol checked every 4 to 6 years. More frequent testing may be needed for individuals with risk factors for heart disease.
The management of dyslipidemia involves lifestyle modifications and pharmacological interventions. Dietary changes, physical activity, and weight management form the cornerstone of dyslipidemia management. Pharmacotherapy is typically initiated when lifestyle modifications are insufficient or in high-risk individuals. Statins are the first-line therapy for dyslipidemia, but other classes of drugs like bile acid sequestrants, niacin, fibric acid derivatives, and PCSK9 inhibitors may also be used.
Understanding and managing dyslipidemia is essential in modern clinical practice. Regular screening, lifestyle modifications, and appropriate pharmacotherapy can effectively manage dyslipidemia and reduce the risk of ASCVD. Continued research and advancements in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies are pivotal to improving patient outcomes.
