This article aims to provide a comprehensive clinical approach towards understanding and managing fatigue.
Fatigue is characterised by an overwhelming sense of tiredness, lack of energy, and a feeling of exhaustion. It can be both physical and mental, and it can significantly impair the patient's quality of life. While fatigue is a common complaint, it is essential to distinguish between normal tiredness and pathological fatigue.
Assessment of fatigue should involve a detailed history taking, including its onset, duration, severity, and associated symptoms. It is crucial to understand the patient's lifestyle, psychosocial factors, and any potential stressors. A thorough physical examination and appropriate investigations can help identify any underlying medical conditions.
Management of fatigue should be individualised and multifaceted, targeting the identified causes. Lifestyle modifications, cognitive behavioural therapy, and pharmacological interventions may all play a role. For fatigue associated with specific medical conditions, treatment should focus on the underlying disease.
Despite advances in understanding fatigue, it remains a challenging symptom to manage. There is a need for more robust diagnostic criteria and validated assessment tools. Furthermore, research is needed to understand the pathophysiology of fatigue better and develop more effective therapeutic strategies.
Fatigue is a complex symptom that requires a comprehensive clinical approach. Recognising, assessing, and managing fatigue effectively can significantly improve patient outcomes. As healthcare professionals, we must continue to evolve our understanding and management of fatigue, ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care.
