Diagnosis

Diagnosis of dyslipidemia involves laboratory measurements of total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and triglycerides. More frequent testing may be needed for individuals with risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, or a family history of premature cardiovascular disease.

Management Strategies

The management of dyslipidemia involves lifestyle modifications and pharmacological interventions. Lifestyle changes include a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, weight control, and smoking cessation. Statins are the first-line pharmacological treatment, reducing LDL-C levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase. Other medications include bile acid sequestrants, niacin, fibrates, and PCSK9 inhibitors. The choice of treatment depends on the patient's lipid profile, risk factors, and potential side effects.
