Understanding Basic Parameters

The basic PFT parameters include Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1), and the FEV1/FVC ratio. FVC reflects the maximum volume of air that can be forcibly exhaled, while FEV1 indicates the volume exhaled in the first second. The FEV1/FVC ratio is a critical indicator of obstructive and restrictive lung diseases.

Interpreting Obstructive and Restrictive Patterns

In obstructive lung diseases, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma, the FEV1/FVC ratio is typically reduced (<70%). Conversely, restrictive diseases like pulmonary fibrosis are characterized by a normal or increased FEV1/FVC ratio alongside a reduced FVC.

Assessing Disease Severity
