Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a growing global health concern, is characterized by excessive hepatic fat accumulation not attributed to high alcohol consumption. It is closely associated with metabolic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia, and is now the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide.
NAFLD affects approximately 25% of the global population. The prevalence is higher in patients with obesity or type 2 diabetes, reaching up to 70-80%. With the increasing global rates of these conditions, the prevalence of NAFLD is expected to rise further, posing a significant challenge to healthcare systems.
NAFLD is often asymptomatic and may be incidentally diagnosed during routine health checks. Liver biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosis but its invasive nature limits its use. Non-invasive methods such as ultrasound, CT, and MRI, as well as blood biomarkers, are increasingly being used. However, these methods have limitations and further research is needed to improve their sensitivity and specificity.
Management of NAFLD involves lifestyle modifications, pharmacological treatments, and in severe cases, liver transplant. Lifestyle modifications, including diet and exercise, are the first-line treatment. Pharmacological treatments are reserved for patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a severe form of NAFLD, and fibrosis. Currently, there are no approved drugs for NAFLD, but several are in clinical trials.
NAFLD is a growing health concern with significant implications for healthcare systems. Early diagnosis and effective management are crucial to prevent its progression to serious liver diseases. There is a need for further research to improve diagnostic tools and develop effective pharmacological treatments. Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in the early detection, management, and prevention of NAFLD.
