Patient education is also essential to ensure adherence and understanding of medication purposes and potential side effects. Where possible, the use of fixed-dose combination drugs can reduce the number of individual medications a patient must take.
Modern technology can greatly assist in the management of polypharmacy. Electronic health records (EHRs) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems can flag potential drug interactions and duplicate therapies. Additionally, mobile health applications can support patient adherence by providing medication reminders and health tracking tools.
While polypharmacy is a complex and challenging aspect of modern healthcare, appropriate strategies and the use of technology can help healthcare providers manage it effectively. Ongoing research and innovation are crucial to further improve our understanding and management of polypharmacy and its potential risks.
