Bursitis is a painful condition that affects many people. It is caused by inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions and lubricates the joints. In order to diagnose bursitis, a doctor will take a medical history and perform a physical exam. The doctor may also order imaging tests, such as X-rays or an MRI, to look for signs of inflammation. If the doctor suspects infection, they may also order blood tests.
The primary treatment for bursitis is rest. The affected joint should be rested and protected from further injury. Ice should also be applied to the area to reduce inflammation. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be taken to reduce pain and inflammation. If the bursitis is caused by an infection, antibiotics may be prescribed.
In addition to the traditional treatments for bursitis, there are several innovative treatments that can help reduce pain and inflammation. These treatments include:
Corticosteroid injections can be used to reduce inflammation and pain. The injection is typically given directly into the affected joint. The corticosteroid reduces inflammation and can provide relief from pain.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a relatively new treatment for bursitis. PRP is a concentrate of platelets that are taken from a patient’s own blood. The platelets are then injected into the affected area. The platelets release growth factors that can reduce inflammation and pain.
Ultrasound-guided injections are becoming more popular for treating bursitis. An ultrasound machine is used to guide the injection of a steroid or other medication directly into the affected area. This can help reduce inflammation and pain more quickly than traditional injections.
Stem cell therapy is a relatively new treatment for bursitis. Stem cells are taken from a patient’s own body and injected into the affected area. The stem cells then help to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
