Microbiological Methods

The most established TB diagnostic approach is microbiological testing, including sputum smear microscopy, culture methods, and nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs). While these methods offer high specificity, their sensitivity can be compromised in cases of paucibacillary TB or non-respiratory TB. Additionally, these methods require sophisticated laboratory infrastructure and trained personnel, limiting their utility in resource-poor settings.

Molecular Diagnostic Techniques

Recent advances in molecular diagnostics have led to the development of rapid, highly sensitive tests such as the Xpert MTB/RIF assay. This test simultaneously detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance, providing results within hours. Imaging techniques, particularly chest radiography, play a crucial role in TB diagnosis. While they provide valuable information about disease extent and complications, their ability to confirm TB diagnosis is limited, as many conditions can mimic TB radiologically.
