Liver cirrhosis, a chronic liver disease, presents a complex clinical challenge due to its multifaceted complications. This article provides a comprehensive guide to understand and manage these complications effectively.
The pathophysiology of liver cirrhosis is characterized by the progressive fibrosis of liver tissue, leading to the formation of regenerative nodules. This disrupts normal liver architecture and function, resulting in a myriad of complications.
Liver cirrhosis can lead to complications such as portal hypertension, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, and hepatocellular carcinoma. These complications can significantly affect the patient's quality of life and survival.
Management of liver cirrhosis requires a multidisciplinary approach. Portal hypertension can be managed with nonselective beta-blockers, while ascites can be treated with diuretics and sodium restriction. Hepatic encephalopathy may be managed with lactulose and rifaximin. Surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma is essential for early detection and treatment.
In advanced stages of liver cirrhosis, liver transplantation may be the only viable treatment option. It is crucial to evaluate patients for transplantation early in the disease course.
