Introduction

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) encompass a diverse group of pulmonary conditions characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of the interstitium. They pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges for clinicians due to their complex pathophysiology and variable clinical presentation. Etiology and Classification

ILDs can be idiopathic or associated with various conditions such as connective tissue diseases, environmental exposures, medications, and genetic disorders. Management

Management of ILDs is primarily aimed at slowing disease progression and improving quality of life. This often involves the use of anti-fibrotic agents, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressive drugs. Pulmonary rehabilitation and supplemental oxygen therapy may help manage symptoms. In advanced cases, lung transplantation may be considered.

Prognosis

The prognosis of ILDs varies greatly, depending on the specific type and severity. IPF, in particular, has a median survival of 2-5 years from diagnosis. Early detection and appropriate management can significantly improve patients' outcomes and quality of life.
