PFTs encompass a variety of tests, each offering unique insights into pulmonary function. Spirometry measures the volume and speed of air that can be inhaled and exhaled, providing data on lung capacity and restrictions. Lung volume tests assess the maximum amount of air lungs can hold, while diffusion capacity tests measure how well oxygen moves from lungs into the blood.
Spirometry results are compared to predicted values based on the patient’s age, height, sex, and ethnicity. Reductions in Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) or Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) may indicate restrictive or obstructive lung diseases respectively. The FEV1/FVC ratio is particularly important in differentiating between these conditions.
Increased lung volumes may suggest obstructive diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma, while decreased volumes can indicate restrictive diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis. Reduced diffusion capacity can signify conditions like emphysema or pulmonary hypertension, where gas exchange is impaired.
PFTs are integral in diagnosing, monitoring, and managing a variety of pulmonary conditions. They can provide objective evidence of disease progression, response to treatment, and help predict prognosis. It's essential to interpret PFTs in the context of the patient's clinical picture and other investigations.
