Vertigo is typically caused by issues within the inner ear or brain. Conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere's disease, or vestibular neuritis can lead to vertigo. Additionally, certain types of migraines and medications can also cause this symptom. Diagnosing vertigo involves a combination of clinical history, physical examination, and in some cases, further diagnostic testing. The physical examination typically includes a neurological exam, balance testing, and eye movement testing. Further tests such as an MRI or CT scan may be required depending on the patient's symptoms and history.
Treatment of vertigo depends upon the underlying cause. BPPV, one of the most common causes, can often be treated with physical maneuvers. Medications can be used for symptomatic relief and to treat underlying conditions such as Meniere's disease or migraines. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
