Introduction

Acute chest pain (ACP) presents a diagnostic challenge for healthcare professionals due to its diverse etiology.

Evaluation of ACP

A thorough history, physical examination, and appropriate diagnostic tests are crucial in evaluating ACP. Red flags such as radiation of pain, dyspnea, diaphoresis, and nausea/vomiting should prompt immediate attention.

Differential Diagnosis

Conditions such as myocardial infarction, angina, pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, and pneumothorax should be considered. Non-cardiac causes like gastroesophageal reflux disease and musculoskeletal pain are also common.

Management

Management strategies depend on the underlying cause. For cardiac causes, prompt reperfusion therapy is essential. Non-cardiac causes require appropriate symptomatic treatment.

Conclusion

Understanding the diverse causes of ACP and adopting a comprehensive approach can significantly improve patient outcomes. Ongoing education and clinical vigilance are key in managing this common but potentially life-threatening symptom.
