Pneumothorax is a condition in which air or gas enters the pleural space, the area between the lungs and chest wall. This causes the lungs to collapse and can be caused by a variety of things, including trauma, medical procedures, and spontaneous rupture of the lung tissue. Symptoms of pneumothorax include chest pain, shortness of breath, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. The severity of the symptoms can vary depending on the size of the pneumothorax.
Tension pneumothorax is a more serious type of pneumothorax in which the air or gas that has entered the pleural space is not able to escape. This causes the pressure in the chest to increase, which can lead to further lung collapse and can be life-threatening. Symptoms of tension pneumothorax include chest pain, shortness of breath, and a feeling of tightness in the chest, as well as rapid breathing, low blood pressure, and shock.
The main difference between pneumothorax and tension pneumothorax is the build-up of pressure in the chest. In pneumothorax, the air or gas is able to escape from the pleural space, whereas in tension pneumothorax, the air or gas is trapped and unable to escape, causing the pressure in the chest to increase. This increased pressure can lead to further lung collapse and can be life-threatening.
Pneumothorax and tension pneumothorax are both diagnosed through imaging tests such as chest X-rays or CT scans. Treatment for pneumothorax usually involves a needle or tube thoracostomy, which allows the air or gas to escape from the pleural space. Treatment for tension pneumothorax may also involve a needle or tube thoracostomy, as well as medications to reduce the pressure in the chest. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair the damaged lung tissue.
