Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily affects movement. It is associated with the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, a part of the brain that controls movement.
The exact cause of PD is unknown; however, it is thought to involve both genetic and environmental factors. The characteristic pathological feature of PD is the presence of Lewy bodies, protein clumps primarily composed of alpha-synuclein, in the brain.
PD typically presents with motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor. Non-motor symptoms, including autonomic dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and mood disorders, are also common.
Diagnosis of PD is based on clinical criteria. Neuroimaging, such as DAT-SPECT, can support the diagnosis but is not required. The UK Brain Bank criteria are commonly used for diagnosis.
There is currently no cure for PD. Treatment is symptomatic and often involves medications to increase or substitute for dopamine. Deep brain stimulation is an option for advanced disease.
The progression of PD varies among individuals. Factors such as age at onset, presence of cognitive impairment, and severity of motor symptoms can influence the prognosis.
Understanding the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of PD is crucial for healthcare professionals. Ongoing research aims to better understand the disease and develop more effective treatments. Prompt recognition and appropriate management can significantly improve the quality of life of individuals with PD.
