Acute abdomen, defined as the sudden onset of severe abdominal pain necessitating urgent medical or surgical assessment, remains a formidable challenge in clinical practice. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is vital, given the potential for life-threatening etiologies. This article synthesizes the latest data, highlights advances in diagnostic approaches, and discusses best practices in the context of contemporary surgical guidelines, with a focus on optimizing diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.
Acute abdominal pain accounts for approximately 5-10% of all emergency department visits and up to 40% of surgical admissions globally.
