Simultaneously, polypharmacy rates are rising, especially among patients with chronic conditions, resulting in frequent co-administration of herbals and prescription drugs. Such combinations pose risks of adverse effects, therapeutic failures, or toxicity due to herb-drug interactions. Healthcare professionals must be equipped with up-to-date knowledge and evidence-based strategies to safely manage these complex scenarios.
Global surveys indicate that up to 40% of patients in some populations use herbal medicines alongside prescription drugs, with higher prevalence among older adults, patients with chronic diseases, and in certain cultural communities.
