This review examines the epidemiological context of aging, underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, risk factors, and clinical features associated with aging, and elaborates on the evidence-based role of Ayurvedic seasonal adaptation. The article further discusses diagnostic approaches, therapeutic strategies, emerging research, and guideline recommendations, providing a framework for clinicians seeking integrative, patient-centered solutions for the aging population.
Healthy aging is a multidimensional construct encompassing physical, mental, and social well-being in older adults. Globally, the aging population is expanding rapidly, intensifying the need for sustainable strategies that support healthspan alongside lifespan. Ayurveda, India\'s traditional system of medicine, emphasizes individualized, seasonally attuned regimens through the concept of Ritucharya. This approach aligns daily routines, diet, and preventive interventions with the cyclical changes in environment, aiming to preserve homeostasis and delay senescence. Despite its ancient origins, the principles of Ayurvedic seasonal adaptation are increasingly corroborated by modern research in chronobiology, immunology, and metabolic health. This review aims to critically evaluate the role of Ayurvedic seasonal adaptation in enhancing quality of life for aging individuals, with a focus on clinical applicability and evidence-based recommendations.
The global population aged 65 and above is projected to reach 1.5 billion by 2050, with a concomitant rise in age-related morbidity, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, and frailty syndromes. Epidemiological data underscore a disproportionate burden of multimorbidity and functional decline among the elderly, often exacerbated by environmental stressors such as seasonal temperature extremes and fluctuating pathogen exposure. These seasonal patterns influence disease exacerbation, hospitalization rates, and mortality in older adults. Addressing modifiable lifestyle factors through seasonally adaptive interventions may attenuate this burden and reduce healthcare utilization.
Aging is characterized by progressive loss of physiological reserve, chronic low-grade inflammation (inflammaging), dysregulation of circadian and seasonal rhythms, and increased susceptibility to oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction. The latter includes determination of doshic imbalances, Prakriti analysis, and evaluation of Agni (digestive/metabolic fire).
