Traditional fragmented care models often result in suboptimal outcomes, care redundancies, and increased caregiver burden. Integrated pediatric care networks have emerged to address these issues by linking multidisciplinary resources across various healthcare settings. Children with medical complexity (CMC) constitute approximately 1% to 3% of the pediatric population but account for a disproportionate share of healthcare utilization and expenditures. The incidence of complex conditions, such as severe cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, and congenital heart disease, has increased due to advances in neonatal and pediatric care improving survival rates. Epidemiological data from North America, Europe, and Asia indicate rising prevalence, with these children frequently requiring recurrent hospital admissions, prolonged intensive care stays, and multiple subspecialist interventions. The burden extends beyond medical care, affecting families psychosocially and economically, and straining healthcare infrastructure with fragmented service delivery.
Complex pediatric conditions are characterized by disruptions in normal developmental trajectories, often involving multisystem pathophysiology. Examples include genetic mutations in cystic fibrosis resulting in defective chloride transport and multisystem organ dysfunction, or hypoxic-ischemic brain injury leading to neurodevelopmental impairment and secondary comorbidities.
