The intersection between food environments and digestive health has garnered increasing attention in recent years, reflecting the rising prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders and the evolving landscape of dietary patterns worldwide. Food environments—defined by the availability, accessibility, affordability, and promotion of various foods—play a crucial role in shaping dietary behaviors and, consequently, digestive health outcomes. This review synthesizes recent epidemiological findings, elucidates pathophysiological mechanisms, evaluates risk factors, and discusses clinical implications, diagnostic approaches, and evidence-based management strategies. Recent advances and guideline recommendations are highlighted to guide clinicians in optimizing digestive health through targeted interventions addressing food environments.
\nDigestive health is a cornerstone of overall well-being, influenced by a complex interplay of genetic predisposition, lifestyle factors, and environmental determinants. Among these, the food environment—encompassing physical, economic, sociocultural, and policy-driven contexts—has emerged as a pivotal determinant of GI health. Modern shifts in food environments, characterized by increased availability of ultra-processed foods and reduced access to nutrient-dense options, have been linked to a surge in GI disorders, including functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and metabolic-associated GI pathologies. Understanding how food environments impact digestive health is essential for clinicians aiming to deliver holistic, preventive, and therapeutic care.
\nThe global burden of digestive diseases has escalated over the past decades, with an estimated 40% of the world population experiencing at least one GI disorder annually.
