If initial tests are unremarkable, further investigations such as endoscopy, imaging studies, or specialized blood tests may be warranted based on clinical suspicion.
Imaging studies play a crucial role in evaluating unexplained weight loss. Abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI may be used to identify potential malignancies, chronic infections, or metabolic disorders. PET scan may be considered in patients with high suspicion of malignancy but negative initial workup.
The management of unexplained weight loss is directed at the underlying cause. In cases where no cause is identified, a symptom-focused approach may be adopted, including nutritional support and psychological intervention.
In conclusion, unexplained weight loss is a complex clinical entity requiring a systematic and comprehensive approach for evaluation. The aim should be to identify treatable causes and to provide supportive care in cases where no underlying cause can be found. Further research is needed to develop more effective diagnostic algorithms and management strategies for this challenging clinical scenario.
