Obesity represents a global health crisis, with a rising prevalence contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Although metabolic body remodeling—encompassing bariatric surgery and intensive lifestyle or pharmacological interventions—can induce substantial short-term weight loss, maintenance of these outcomes over the long term is notoriously difficult. Understanding the determinants of weight recurrence and effective case-based strategies to support sustained weight control is crucial for optimizing patient care in clinical practice.
Globally, the prevalence of obesity has nearly tripled since 1975, with the World Health Organization estimating over 650 million adults with obesity in 2016. Post-metabolic interventions, up to 50% of patients experience significant weight regain within five years, underscoring the chronic and relapsing nature of obesity. This relapse elevates the risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers, placing a continual burden on healthcare systems and highlighting the necessity for durable solutions.
Weight regain after metabolic body remodeling is multifactorial.
