Thyroid nodules are more prevalent in females, the elderly, and those with a history of radiation exposure. Other risk factors include family history of thyroid cancer and iodine deficiency. Understanding these factors is essential in assessing the risk of malignancy.
A thorough clinical evaluation is the first step in the management of thyroid nodules. This includes a complete medical history, physical examination, and assessment of symptoms. A nodule's size, consistency, and mobility can provide valuable information about its nature.
Ultrasonography is the primary imaging modality for thyroid nodules, providing information about size, composition, and vascularity. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is the most reliable diagnostic procedure for distinguishing benign from malignant nodules. Molecular testing may be used when FNAB results are indeterminate.
Management of thyroid nodules depends on the risk of malignancy. Benign nodules may be monitored, while surgery is often recommended for malignant or suspicious nodules. Radioactive iodine therapy and thyroid hormone suppression therapy are other treatment options.
Thyroid nodule evaluation is a complex process that requires a comprehensive understanding of risk factors, clinical evaluation, diagnostic tools, and management strategies.
