The thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped endocrine organ, plays a crucial role in metabolic regulation through the production of thyroid hormones, T3 and T4. Disorders of the thyroid typically result from dysregulation of these hormones, leading to conditions such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease represent significant etiological factors.
Thyroid disorders present a wide range of clinical manifestations. Hypothyroidism is characterized by fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and depression. In contrast, hyperthyroidism features symptoms such as weight loss, heat intolerance, palpitations, and anxiety. Hypothyroidism is typically managed with levothyroxine, while hyperthyroidism may be treated with antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine, or surgery. Regular follow-up is essential to monitor treatment efficacy and adjust dosages as needed.
