Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with diabetes. Effective management of cardiovascular risk in this population is therefore crucial. This article provides a comprehensive guide for healthcare professionals on assessing and managing cardiovascular risk in diabetic patients.
Risk assessment is the first step in managing cardiovascular risk in diabetic patients. It involves evaluating traditional risk factors, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, and smoking, along with diabetes-specific factors like duration of diabetes, presence of kidney disease, and level of glycemic control. Tools such as the UKPDS risk engine can be used for quantifying cardiovascular risk in this population.
Management strategies should focus on lifestyle modifications, optimal glycemic control, and pharmacological interventions. SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists have emerged as valuable tools in this regard. By implementing these strategies, healthcare professionals can significantly reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in this high-risk population.
