The physical examination should be systematic, starting with inspection and palpation, followed by auscultation and percussion.
The diagnostic approach to abdominal pain should be guided by the patient's history and physical examination findings. Laboratory tests, including a complete blood count, liver function tests, and a urinalysis, can provide additional clues. Imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI may be necessary depending on the suspected diagnosis. In some cases, endoscopic procedures may be required to confirm the diagnosis.
Common causes of abdominal pain include gastroenteritis, appendicitis, cholecystitis, peptic ulcer disease, and diverticulitis. Less common but serious causes include abdominal aortic aneurysm, mesenteric ischemia, and malignancies. Each of these conditions has distinct clinical features that can aid in the diagnosis.
Management strategies for abdominal pain depend on the underlying cause. Analgesics can be used to manage the pain, but caution should be exercised as they can mask symptoms and complicate the diagnosis. In cases of surgical emergencies, immediate referral to a surgeon is necessary. For non-emergent cases, conservative management with close follow-up may be appropriate.
Patients with abdominal pain should be closely monitored for changes in their symptoms. If the pain persists or worsens, further diagnostic evaluation may be necessary. If a specific diagnosis cannot be established after a thorough evaluation, referral to a specialist may be warranted.

Understanding the common causes of abdominal pain and their clinical features can aid in the diagnosis.
