India, with its vast population and diverse geographical features, presents a significant challenge in the management and control of vector-borne diseases. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the burden of such diseases in India, focusing on their epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and control strategies.
Vector-borne diseases, including malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and lymphatic filariasis, are a major public health concern in India. The country accounts for 4% of the global burden of these diseases, with the highest prevalence observed in the eastern and northeastern regions. The epidemiological profile of these diseases is influenced by factors such as climate, vector behavior, and socioeconomic conditions.
The clinical manifestations of vector-borne diseases are diverse, often leading to diagnostic challenges. Malaria presents with fever, chills, and anemia; dengue with high fever, severe headache, and joint pain; chikungunya with fever and severe joint pain; Japanese encephalitis with fever, headache, and mental status changes; and lymphatic filariasis with lymphedema and elephantiasis. Timely diagnosis is crucial to prevent complications and reduce mortality.
Control strategies for vector-borne diseases in India involve vector control, early diagnosis, prompt treatment, and community education. Vector control includes environmental management and use of insecticides. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are achieved through strengthening health systems and surveillance. Community education is essential to raise awareness about prevention measures.
Vector-borne diseases pose a significant health burden in India. Understanding their epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and control strategies is essential for healthcare professionals. Collaborative efforts between the government, healthcare providers, and communities can help mitigate the impact of these diseases.
