Hypothyroidism, characterized by an underactive thyroid, is the most common, affecting about 5% of the population. Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, is marked by an overactive thyroid. Thyroid nodules, although not always indicative of disease, can sometimes lead to cancer.
The pathophysiology of thyroid disorders is multifaceted, often involving a combination of genetic, autoimmune, and environmental factors.
