The persistent global burden of Tuberculosis (TB) necessitates continual advancements in detection methodologies. These advancements aim to improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce turnaround time, and increase accessibility.
The most common traditional methods for TB detection include sputum smear microscopy and culture methods. However, these methods have limitations such as low sensitivity, long turnaround time, and the need for sophisticated laboratory infrastructure.
Recent years have witnessed significant strides in TB detection. The GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay, a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), has revolutionized TB detection by providing results within hours with high sensitivity and specificity. Furthermore, the advent of digital radiography and computer-aided detection systems offer promising improvements in TB screening, particularly in resource-limited settings.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Future research should focus on developing point-of-care tests and improving the detection of drug-resistant TB. Additionally, integrating artificial intelligence with digital radiography could enhance diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.
While significant progress has been made in TB detection, ongoing research and innovation are critical to further improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce turnaround times, and increase accessibility, particularly in resource-limited settings.
