Stroke symptoms often present suddenly. Key signs include facial drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulties. Other symptoms may include sudden numbness, confusion, visual disturbances, dizziness, or severe headache. Rapid recognition of these symptoms using the FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) method is crucial for timely intervention.
Upon suspicion of a stroke, immediate diagnostic tools such as CT scans or MRI are employed to confirm the diagnosis and identify the type of stroke. Additional diagnostic tests may include blood tests, carotid ultrasonography, or cerebral angiography. These tests provide valuable information about the patient's overall health and the extent of the stroke.
Time is of the essence in stroke management. Intravenous thrombolysis, administered within 4.5 hours of symptom onset, can significantly improve outcomes. In the case of an ischemic stroke, antiplatelet therapy is initiated. Endovascular procedures may be required for large vessel occlusions. For hemorrhagic strokes, management focuses on controlling bleeding and reducing intracranial pressure.

A multidisciplinary approach involving physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy is often necessary. Secondary prevention measures, including control of high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation management, and lifestyle modifications, are also integral to care.
