Fine-needle aspiration biopsy is the most reliable method for cytological evaluation. It can differentiate benign from malignant nodules and guide further management.
Management depends on the size, characteristics of the nodule, and the cytological findings. Options range from watchful waiting for benign nodules to surgery for malignant or suspicious nodules. Radioactive iodine and thyroid hormone suppression therapy may also be considered in certain cases.
Follow-up is crucial in the management of thyroid nodules. It involves regular physical examination, thyroid function tests, and ultrasound. The frequency of follow-up depends on the initial cytological findings and the clinical course.
