Diagnosis requires a comprehensive approach, beginning with a detailed history and physical examination. The history should focus on the onset, duration, associated symptoms, and any precipitating factors. The physical examination should include orthostatic blood pressure measurements and a cardiovascular examination.
Further investigations depend on the initial assessment. Routine tests include electrocardiography and blood tests to exclude anemia or metabolic abnormalities. More specific tests, such as echocardiography or tilt-table testing, may be indicated based on clinical suspicion.
Management of syncope depends on the underlying cause. It can range from reassurance and lifestyle modifications for benign conditions to pharmacological treatment or even cardiac pacing for more serious disorders. Patient education about the nature of the condition and the importance of avoiding triggering factors is crucial.
Syncope is a common clinical problem that requires a systematic and comprehensive approach for diagnosis and management. By understanding the various causes and implementing a thorough evaluation process, healthcare professionals can effectively manage patients with syncope, improving their quality of life and potentially preventing serious complications.
