With the persistent global burden of Tuberculosis (TB), early and accurate detection remains a cornerstone in combating this disease. The recent years have seen significant advancements in TB diagnostic strategies, enhancing the efficiency of detection and management.
Introduced by Cepheid, the GeneXpert MTB/RIF system has revolutionized TB diagnosis. This automated, cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification test provides results within two hours, identifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and rifampicin resistance simultaneously.
World Health Organization-endorsed Line Probe Assays (LPAs) have been instrumental in detecting drug-resistant TB. LPAs allow for rapid identification of resistance to rifampicin and isoniazid, the two most potent first-line anti-TB drugs.
Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) provides comprehensive genetic information, enabling the detection of drug resistance and strain typing. NGS's high-throughput capabilities make it a promising tool for TB diagnostics.
These advancements in TB detection have propelled us closer to the goal of TB elimination. However, the challenge of accessibility and cost-effectiveness in resource-limited settings persists. Continued innovation and investment in diagnostic strategies are essential to curb the global TB epidemic.
