Dyslipidemia, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is characterized by abnormal lipid levels in the bloodstream. Understanding its management is crucial for clinicians.
Primarily, dyslipidemia results from genetic predisposition and lifestyle factors. It involves elevated LDL cholesterol, reduced HDL cholesterol, or increased triglycerides.
Management of dyslipidemia includes lifestyle modifications, pharmacological intervention, and regular monitoring. Therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC) are the first-line treatment, focusing on diet, physical activity, and weight management.
When TLC is insufficient, pharmacological intervention is necessary. Statins are the first-line drug therapy, with other options including bile acid sequestrants, niacin, and fibrates.
Understanding and managing dyslipidemia is vital to reducing cardiovascular disease risk. Clinicians should focus on lifestyle modifications and appropriate pharmacological intervention for optimal patient outcomes.
