Pancreatitis, classified as acute or chronic, is often associated with gallstones and excessive alcohol consumption. It is characterized by the premature activation of pancreatic enzymes, leading to autodigestion and inflammation of the pancreas.

The pain is typically persistent, worsens after eating and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and a distended abdomen. Fever, tachycardia, and hypotension may also be present, indicative of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS).
