Depending on the clinical context, more specific tests like serology, PCR, or imaging may be required.
Interpreting the results in light of the patient's clinical presentation is the next step. This can help narrow down potential differential diagnoses. For instance, a high neutrophil count in the CBC may suggest a bacterial infection, whereas a high lymphocyte count could indicate a viral etiology. Moreover, persistent fever despite negative investigations could point towards non-infectious causes such as malignancies or autoimmune conditions.
Treatment should be initiated based on the presumed diagnosis, while awaiting confirmatory test results. Empirical antibiotic therapy is often started in suspected bacterial infections. Regular follow-up is essential to assess the response to treatment and adjust the therapeutic strategy if necessary.

A thorough history, physical examination, and judicious use of laboratory investigations can help clinicians uncover the underlying cause and formulate an appropriate treatment plan.
