Pharmacotherapies such as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), bupropion, and varenicline have shown to improve smoking cessation rates. These should be considered for all patients attempting to quit, unless contraindicated. It is essential to explain the benefits, side effects, and proper use of these medications.
Behavioral interventions, including counseling and cognitive-behavioral therapy, can significantly enhance the efficacy of pharmacotherapies. Motivational interviewing techniques can help resolve ambivalence about quitting and enhance motivation. Group or individual counseling can provide support and teach coping strategies.

Regular follow-up and long-term support are crucial to maintain abstinence. Healthcare professionals should monitor progress, address relapses, and reinforce the benefits of cessation. Support can be provided in various ways, including face-to-face visits, telephone calls, or digital platforms.
Implementing effective smoking cessation strategies requires a comprehensive, patient-centered approach. By integrating pharmacological and behavioral interventions, and providing ongoing support, healthcare professionals can significantly contribute to reducing the burden of tobacco use.
