This article aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive guide to early stroke recognition and management.
Early stroke recognition is vital for prompt intervention. The BE FAST model is an effective tool for identifying potential stroke patients. B for Balance difficulties, E for Eyesight problems, F for Face drooping, A for Arm weakness, S for Speech difficulties, and T for Time to call emergency services. This model emphasizes the importance of swift action in the face of potential stroke symptoms.
Once a stroke is suspected, immediate management includes maintaining airway, breathing, and circulation, stabilizing vital signs, and initiating intravenous access. It is also crucial to obtain a rapid brain imaging study, preferably a non-contrast CT scan, to differentiate between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
Acute ischemic stroke management may involve intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) if administered within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. Endovascular procedures like mechanical thrombectomy can be considered within 24 hours in certain patients. Hemorrhagic stroke management focuses on controlling blood pressure, reversing anticoagulation, and surgical intervention when indicated.
Stroke recognition and management require a systematic approach. Utilizing the BE FAST model can facilitate early identification of symptoms. Immediate stabilization, appropriate imaging, and timely intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes.
