Erythema abigne is usually diagnosed based on the patient's history and physical examination. A doctor may also perform a skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. A skin biopsy involves taking a small sample of the affected skin and examining it under a microscope. This can help determine the extent of the damage and rule out other possible causes of the symptoms.
The primary treatment for erythema abigne is to protect the skin from further UV radiation exposure. This can be done by avoiding direct sunlight, wearing protective clothing, and using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. In addition, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce pain and swelling. For severe cases, a doctor may prescribe a topical or oral steroid to reduce inflammation.
