Its management poses significant challenges due to the heterogeneity of symptoms and the lack of a definitive diagnostic test. IBS is characterized by recurrent abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits. It is classified into subtypes based on predominant stool patterns: IBS with constipation (IBS-C), IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D), mixed IBS (IBS-M), and unclassified IBS (IBS-U). Understanding these subtypes is crucial for effective treatment.
IBS is typically diagnosed based on symptom criteria, such as the Rome IV criteria, in the absence of alarming features. Optimizing the management of IBS requires a comprehensive, patient-centered approach. Understanding the patient's symptoms, establishing a correct diagnosis, and tailoring the treatment plan are key to improving the quality of life of patients with IBS. Ongoing research in this field will likely provide additional tools for the effective management of this complex disorder.
