Pulmonary function testing (PFT) is a critical tool in diagnosing and managing various respiratory conditions. Beyond diagnosis, PFT is also used for disease monitoring and prognosis. For instance, a declining FEV1 in a patient with COPD may indicate disease progression. Additionally, PFT can assess response to therapy, such as bronchodilator responsiveness in asthma patients.
Interpretation of PFT results should always consider reference values, which vary based on factors like age, sex, height, and ethnicity. Comparing patient's results with these norms helps identify abnormal findings and their clinical significance.
Interpreting PFT results is a crucial skill for healthcare professionals managing respiratory disorders. It requires understanding of key parameters, recognition of disease patterns, application in clinical practice, and consideration of reference values.
