This leads to a significant reduction in striatal dopamine levels, causing the classic motor symptoms of tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia. Non-motor symptoms, such as cognitive impairment and autonomic dysfunction, are attributed to the involvement of other neuronal systems.
Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on the presence of cardinal motor symptoms and supportive features. Neuroimaging, although not routinely required, can aid in diagnosis in uncertain cases. DaTscan, a specialized SPECT imaging, can demonstrate dopaminergic deficit, supporting a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.
