Calcium is a critical mineral for bone health. Approximately 99% of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth. It provides structural rigidity and is necessary for the mineralization of bone. Additionally, calcium plays a significant role in intracellular signaling, blood clotting, and muscle contraction.
The body maintains calcium homeostasis through a delicate balance of absorption, excretion, and bone remodeling. Key regulators of this process include parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and calcitonin. PTH and vitamin D increase blood calcium levels by promoting bone resorption, intestinal absorption of calcium, and renal calcium reabsorption. Conversely, calcitonin decreases blood calcium levels by inhibiting bone resorption.
Disruptions in calcium and bone metabolism can lead to various disorders. For instance, hyperparathyroidism results in excessive calcium release from bones, leading to hypercalcemia and bone loss. These include dietary modifications, calcium and vitamin D supplements, and medications such as bisphosphonates, which inhibit bone resorption. Furthermore, monitoring serum calcium and bone density can help assess the effectiveness of treatment and screen for potential complications.
