Dyslipidemia can be primary (genetic) or secondary (resulting from lifestyle or other conditions). It is typically marked by high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), or elevated triglycerides. These imbalances can lead to atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Diagnosis is primarily based on fasting lipid panel results, assessing total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and triglycerides. Genetic testing may be considered for individuals with a strong family history of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease or severe hypercholesterolemia.
Management of dyslipidemia involves a multifaceted approach. Lifestyle modifications, including a heart-healthy diet, regular physical activity, and weight management, form the cornerstone. Pharmacological interventions may be required for patients at high risk. Statins are the first-line therapy, while other agents like bile acid sequestrants, niacin, fibrates, and PCSK9 inhibitors may be used based on individual patient profiles.
Empowering patients with knowledge about their condition is essential. Clinicians should educate patients about the importance of adhering to prescribed treatments, potential side effects, and the need for regular follow-up and monitoring.
Understanding and managing dyslipidemia requires a comprehensive and individualized approach. By staying abreast of the latest research and guidelines, clinicians can effectively reduce the cardiovascular risk associated with dyslipidemia, thereby improving patient outcomes.
