Stroke, a leading cause of disability and mortality globally, necessitates prompt recognition and intervention. This article aims to provide a comprehensive guide for healthcare professionals on early stroke recognition and management.
Stroke symptoms often appear abruptly. The acronym FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services) is a useful tool for early recognition. Additionally, sudden onset of vision disturbances, dizziness, severe headache, and balance issues should raise suspicion. It is crucial to note that stroke symptoms can vary depending on the affected brain area.
Upon patient arrival, time is of the essence. Immediate assessment using validated tools such as the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) helps quantify stroke severity. Computed tomography (CT) scans should be performed promptly to differentiate between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.
Acute stroke management differs based on the stroke type. For ischemic strokes, intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is the treatment of choice if administered within 4.5 hours from symptom onset. Endovascular thrombectomy is also an option for large vessel occlusions. Hemorrhagic strokes, on the other hand, may require surgical intervention.
Once the acute phase is managed, focus shifts to secondary prevention to reduce stroke recurrence. This includes managing risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and atrial fibrillation. Lifestyle modifications and adherence to medication regimens are also essential.
Early stroke recognition and management can significantly improve patient outcomes. Healthcare professionals should be adept at identifying early stroke signs, conducting rapid assessments, and initiating appropriate treatment promptly. Further, emphasis on secondary prevention strategies can help mitigate the risk of recurrent strokes.
