Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis (ANUG), also known as trench mouth, is an inflammatory gum disease that affects the gums and surrounding soft tissue in the mouth. It is a severe and painful condition that can lead to loss of teeth and other complications if left untreated. ANUG is caused by a combination of factors, including poor oral hygiene, smoking, stress, and certain medications. It is more common in young adults and adolescents and is often linked to poor nutrition and inadequate oral hygiene. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for successful management of ANUG.
ANUG is characterized by painful, swollen gums that are often red and bleed easily. The gums may also be tender to the touch and may appear to be ulcerated or have a yellowish-gray coating. In some cases, the gums may become so swollen that they cover the teeth. Other symptoms of ANUG may include bad breath, a metallic taste in the mouth, difficulty eating, and fever.
The exact cause of ANUG is not known, but it is believed to be caused by a combination of factors. Poor oral hygiene is one of the most common causes of ANUG. Plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth can lead to inflammation of the gums, which can make them more vulnerable to infection. Other factors that may contribute to ANUG include smoking, stress, certain medications, poor nutrition, and some medical conditions.
ANUG is usually diagnosed based on a physical examination of the mouth and a review of the patient’s medical history. A dentist or doctor may also take a sample of the affected tissue for laboratory testing. This can help to rule out other conditions that may have similar symptoms.
Treatment for ANUG typically involves a combination of medications and lifestyle changes. Antibiotics may be prescribed to help fight the infection and reduce inflammation. Pain medications may also be prescribed to help with the pain and discomfort associated with ANUG. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove dead tissue or to repair damaged gums. Good oral hygiene is essential for managing ANUG. This includes brushing and flossing regularly and using an antiseptic mouthwash. It is also important to avoid smoking and to limit the use of certain medications, such as those that contain corticosteroids. Eating a balanced diet and reducing stress can also help to manage ANUG.
The best way to prevent ANUG is to practice good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing regularly and using an antiseptic mouthwash can help to reduce the risk of ANUG. It is also important to avoid smoking and to limit the use of certain medications, such as those that contain corticosteroids. Eating a balanced diet and reducing stress can also help to prevent ANUG.
