The pathophysiology of hypertensive emergencies involves a sudden increase in systemic vascular resistance, leading to end-organ damage. The clinical manifestations vary depending on the organ system involved, with common symptoms including severe headache, shortness of breath, chest pain, and neurological deficits.
Diagnosis involves careful history taking, physical examination, and laboratory investigations. Blood tests, electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, and other imaging studies may be required to identify end-organ damage. It is important to differentiate hypertensive emergencies from hypertensive urgencies, where BP is severely elevated but without evidence of acute end-organ damage.
Management of hypertensive emergencies requires rapid but controlled reduction of BP. Intravenous antihypertensive medications are typically used, with the choice of drug depending on the affected organ system. Hypertensive emergencies necessitate prompt recognition and effective management to prevent irreversible organ damage. A comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic strategies, and management options is vital for healthcare professionals to provide optimal care for these patients.
