Abstract

Introduction

Voice is a vital component of human communication and quality of life. Acoustic analysis, aerodynamic measurements, and validated patient-reported outcome measures (e.g., Voice Handicap Index) provide objective and subjective assessment of voice function. Multidisciplinary evaluation involving otolaryngologists and speech-language pathologists is recommended for diagnostic accuracy and tailored intervention planning.

Treatment & Management

Management is primarily conservative and multidisciplinary, emphasizing behavioral voice therapy as first-line intervention. Therapy targets include reduction of maladaptive muscle patterns, optimization of breath support, and improvement of vocal technique. Cognitive-behavioral approaches are beneficial for addressing psychological contributors. Adjunctive pharmacological therapy may be indicated for comorbid GERD, allergies, or muscle tension. Rarely, botulinum toxin injections or surgical interventions are considered in refractory cases. Voice therapy remains the cornerstone of management, with strong evidence for efficacy in both acute and chronic presentations. Multidisciplinary collaboration, patient-centered education, and incorporation of evidence-based adjuncts are recommended. Ongoing monitoring of therapeutic response and modification of management plans based on objective voice outcomes are best practices endorsed by major otolaryngology and speech-language pathology societies.
