Laryngeal function-preserving interventions encompass a wide spectrum of surgical and non-surgical approaches aimed at treating laryngeal disorders—primarily malignancies—while maintaining the essential physiological roles of the larynx. Additionally, benign laryngeal disorders—such as recurrent respiratory papillomatosis and bilateral vocal fold paralysis—also benefit from function-preserving techniques, further expanding the scope and importance of this clinical domain. The disease burden extends beyond survival; impairments in voice, swallowing, and airway protection contribute to profound psychosocial and functional morbidity, underscoring the need for vigilant long-term management.
The larynx serves complex roles in phonation, airway protection, and respiration. Pathological processes—most notably squamous cell carcinoma—can disrupt these functions through direct invasion or impaired neuromuscular control. Function-preserving interventions aim to excise or ablate pathological tissue while maintaining as much native anatomy and neuromuscular integrity as possible.
