Approximately 99% of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth, where it supports their structure and functionality. Adequate calcium intake is essential throughout life, as it promotes optimal bone health and can prevent osteoporosis—a condition characterized by fragile bones.
Calcium plays a pivotal role in bone metabolism, which comprises two continuous, concurrent processes: bone formation and bone resorption. During bone formation, osteoblasts build bone, while in bone resorption, osteoclasts break down bone. Both processes are critical for maintaining the skeletal system's health and integrity. Calcium is crucial in these processes, as it is the primary component of hydroxyapatite, the mineral complex that gives strength and rigidity to the bones and teeth.
Calcium levels in the body are tightly regulated by hormones such as parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D, and calcitonin. PTH and vitamin D increase calcium levels by promoting bone resorption, increasing intestinal calcium absorption, and reducing renal calcium excretion. On the other hand, calcitonin decreases calcium levels by inhibiting bone resorption.
